Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What licence's and qualifications do you have?
Tyler Technical Services hold a West Australian electrical contractors licence No EC7431 issued by the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection. Our technical staff are fully qualified and hold an "A" grade electrical workers licence and an ACA open cables registration for communications installations issued by BICSI. We have also received training in installation and design of Clipsal integrated systems C-Bus & Starserve, Data Networking and Testing and Optic Fibre.
Q2. What is smart wiring?
Smart wiring or structured wiring system as it is correctly known is a wiring system to manage and distribute telephone, TV, Satellite TV, audio, computer network, security cameras and a whole lot more around your home. Many existing and future technologies will make use of this system, it complements any existing automation systems and requires no programming or software. Imagine being able to view the TV, listen to audio, connect to the Internet and monitor your front door security camera from any room or multiple rooms simultaneously in your home, that's smart!
Q3. What is home automation?
Home automation encompasses a myriad of things and the term can be used to describe a single room lighting control for say a home theatre or a full home system which takes control and manages lighting, environmental controls, security etc. Many systems have the ability to receive dial in instructions and PC control of equipment connected to and controlled by the automation system. Clipsal C-bus is one such system and uses an electrical "bus" to send signals around your home to input and output devices. Another system available is X10 which uses the standard electrical cables to send the signals and therefore requires very little installation. There are a large number of manufacturers of home automation equipment only two of which are mentioned here, please talk to us so we can advise on the correct system to suit your project and budget.
Q4. How much will a Smart Wiring system cost?
This is very difficult to answer as it depends very much on your final specification and which system you choose, however the cost impact can be minimized by installing in stages and adding to the system as you go. Smart wiring is best installed while the property is being constructed or renovated and the wiring network and central hub needs to be installed first and hidden in the building fabric. The data outlet plates, modulators, IR control and audio units can be added later thus spreading the cost over a longer period. As a guide at the time of writing a typical 3/4 bedroom single storey home can have the initial cabling and hub installed for around AUS$1900 or less however this wil have limited functionality dependant upon specification and size of property. A free quotation will be provided upon request after consultation and review of your home plans.
Q5. How much will home automation cost?
Again this is a difficult question to answer as there are many variables and full consultation would be required to fully assess your requirements. An X10 system to dim or control lights in the same room can cost very much less and may have some DIY elements to it to save you more, it's up to you.
Q6. I'm about to build a new home and would like to have some of these systems but don't know where to start and our budget is very tight what can I do?
First contact us straight away, pre start advice is free and you under no obligation. If you cant afford to install the system you would like there are some low cost preparation works which could be done during construction which would save you money down the track when you want proceed with a full system. Like ensuring cables are installed into inaccessible places and conduits and electrical boxes installed into the plaster work for future use.
Q7. Can these systems be installed into an existing home?
Yes but in some instances final positions of the central hub and data outlets may be limited due to accessibility and installation difficulties. This also holds true for home automation particularly in systems that require the installation of an electrical bus, however in these cases X10 is becoming a real viable and cost effective alternative.
Q8. What geographical area do you cover?
As we are situated in Harrisdale (near Canning Vale) which is about 15 min's south of the Perth CBD we are for the moment limited to the Perth Metropolitan area.
Q9. What is C-Bus?
C-Bus manufactured by Clipsal, is a micro-processor controlled automation system using unshielded twisted pair data cable as it's communication medium to control lighting, air-conditioning and other building services. Information is sent from input units such as key inputs (switches), touch screens and occupancy sensors via the C-Bus data network cable to the appropriate output units such as relays and dimmers. More information can be found in the Home Automation Section on this WEB site or from http://www.clipsal.com/cis/profile.php3
Q10. What is X10?
X10 is an automation system very similar to C-bus but with the exception that is uses the existing home mains wiring to send the signals from input devices to output devices rather than a dedicated data network. Programming of the X10 does not require a PC or any indepth programming knowledge but it can have PC and touch screen controls. There are some elements of the X10 system which can be considered a DIY installation as they are simple plug in units, more information can be found on the WEB site or from www.smarthome.com.au
